Graphic Scores Project with artist Josephine Ganter

In 2014 Raymond MacDonald began to collaborate with Artist Josephine Ganter to make a series of graphic scores. Graphic scores represent music using visual images outside the realm of traditional music notation, and have been an effective way for experimental musicians to convey musical ideas since the 1950s.

Over the past seven years they have been creating prints that function equally as visual art and musical score. They sit simultaneously on music stands, and framed on the wall. Both the image and the music are genuinely co-authored Jo having equal responsibility for the music as Raymond does, and vice versa. They have exhibited this work in galleries across the UK and in China and USA, including an exhibition in the Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music, 25 Sep - 3 Oct 2021.
